The suburb's story starts with a rezoning. Green-belt land opened up here in 1959, and it filled in fast through the 1960s to the 1980s.

That's why most of what you see today, on the higher ground especially, is brick and brick-veneer houses from that build wave.

Street names like Agincourt Road and Vimiera Road nod to old battle honours, part of the "Field of Mars" origins the whole district takes its name from.

Lower down toward Macquarie Park, the mix shifts to townhouses and apartments, a second, later wave built on flatter land closer to the university and the business precinct.

A lot of these original boards still run ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers, with no safety switch protecting the circuits at all.

We see it most on Vimiera Road: older detached homes where the fuse box hasn't been touched since the house went up, and the first sign of trouble is a fuse that won't stop blowing.

Bringing a switchboard here up to a safety-switch standard is one of the most common jobs we do in this pocket, alongside general rewiring as these houses get renovated one by one.

The suburb carries a mixed household profile too: long-settled families in the older brick houses and a steadier turnover of renters and owners in the newer unit stock closer to Macquarie Park. Both bring different electrical needs, and we're set up for either.

Two other faults turn up again and again once we're inside a switchboard in this area.

Old ceramic-fuse boards top the list. Original 1960s-80s fuse panels carry no modern circuit protection, common on the older streets and usually the first thing we flag on a visit.

Left alone, a ceramic fuse just blows again under the same load rather than tripping safely, which is exactly the fault a proper safety switch is built to catch. Our switchboard upgrades service handles the fix.

Renovation-era rewires are the second pattern. As these brick homes get modernised, the original circuits often can't carry the extra load a new kitchen, a home office or a ducted system adds.

A third, quieter issue: ageing power circuits. Homes from the development boom were built for far less than today's appliance load, so points trip more as families add reverse-cycle units and extra devices to a circuit never designed for them.
